Frost Cracking in Trees
Extremely cold weather can cause thin-barked trees to crack all over Asheville, NC. We often don’t get a chance to see the type of damage winter has inflicted on our trees until after spring hits and all the snow or ice has melted. Very low temperatures in Asheville can crack trees. This is often found in trees that are also exposed to direct sunlight.
The most common species of trees that are affected by this include Sycamores, Maples, Apples, Cherries, horse chestnuts, lindens, walnuts, and willows. The problem isnt so much the cracking because when spring comes around they do end up sealing up. The issue is that they don’t completely close. This allows an entry point for pests and disease to get inside a tree causing it to become infested.
