Protecting Your Trees from Disease
In order to protect the trees on your property from disease you will have to be
willing to cut your losses as they appear. A tree that is sick will not always
show symptoms on the outside. This is where the true difficulty of caring for
sick trees presents itself. By the time physical symptoms show on the outside
of the tree it is normally too late. In this case it is important that the tree
is removed as soon as possible in order to curb the spread to the disease to
the others in your area.
One of the best preventative measures available to
homeowners is the spreading of fungicide to prevent the infection of fungi. The
highest cause of disease in trees is infestations by insects. Insects spread
disease faster than any living organism on the face of the earth. So it is
essential that your trees are sprayed with insecticides to kill the insects lying
inside. Furthermore, this process will ultimately kill the eggs planted inside
the tree. You can isolate your trees as well; this is done by digging a 3 – 5
feet deep trench surrounding the sick trees. This will effectively cut off the
roots preventing the spread of the disease. In some cases, your area may be
prone to select diseases. In these cases, it is recommended that the homeowner
plant trees which are specifically resilient to the diseases plaguing their
lands.
