How You Can Be a Smart Tree Care Consumer
Have you ever had a flyer dropped in your mailbox warning
you that your tree is sick? Perhaps a note placed under your door saying your
oak tree has a fungus? The flyer or note might go on to tell you that that they
can cure your tree. The company that placed the flyer or note is likely telling
how they can treat the condition your tree has, take care of your fertilizing,
use insecticides, and even administer antibiotics.
Have you ever picked up the phone and called the company on
the flyer. You may then have been sold services and agreed to these services
before you even realized what was happening. This is not the best way for you
to find tree care for your trees. A much safer method is to locate a
professional tree care company by doing your homework, that way you will know
that you can trust them.
This should serve as a reminder of the need for you to be
knowledgeable as a tree care consumer and use caution when hiring services.
This will help you to avoid wasting your hard earned money on services you do
not need, or treatments that might actually harm your tree(s). Unnecessary
pesticides and fertilizers can also contribute to environmental damage.
There are many good arborists and tree care companies, but
there also are some people whose only focus is to sell a product. What is most
troubling is how little these companies actually know about trees or the products they sell.
Here are a few things you can do to be a smarter consumer
when it comes to tree care.
·
Ask for qualifications. If an arborist is ISA
certified this is a good indication that they are knowledgeable and follow a
specific code of ethics.
·
If a company or product sounds to good to be
true it likely is. No product can cure all. It’s good to avoid these
situations.
·
Learn about your trees and the tree care you
might need so you can be a better judge of the services being offered to you.
·
Less is more except when it comes to water.
Trees don’t need repeated treatments.
·
Use company literature and web sites to learn more
about the services and products provided.
